"Painting of a Painting"
Elizabeth Barnett | Portraits of Early Summer
“The ranges are quiet in the summer time when residents escape to coastal climes. Through the open window you look out into the early summer garden to the trees that line its edge, haloed by pink hued afternoon light. Heat is all around and once lush grass dries to a crispy straw underfoot. Ghostly gums illicit the strong scent of eucalyptus. The abundance of the summer veggie patch and fluorescent colours radiating off surfaces. Summer interiors are more muted, pale in tone and gentle. A place to rest eyes and sun-stroked bodies.
The canvas is turned on its head from landscape to portrait as if looking through a long window. They capture moments, a breath in time, those ephemeral minutes before the sun dips behind the opposing line of trees, when the cooler air slips down from the mount and cools us all in the foot hills, bringing respite from the heat for another evening.”
